UPDATE 1-Storms batter France, Britain and Switzerland

The manager of the power grid, Electricite Reseau

Distribution France, said earlier that a total 608,000 homes

were cut off from the power grid across northern regions of the

country as trees and electricity pylons fell down.

The worst-hit areas were a belt of regions along the centre

of the country, the coastal Pays de la Loire, the region around

Orleans, just to the east, and Burgundy, further east.

Switzerland was swept by high winds on Monday night and

Tuesday morning, with gales reaching up to 150 kph in the Jura

Winds were expected to strengthen during the day, moving
